Click on the pages linked below to view Google maps that list the Ohio Black Civil War soldiers, sailors, and veterans who were born, lived, enlisted, and are buried in that county. The African American men served in the United States Colored Troops and the U.S. Navy.

You will also find maps that show where each county is in the state, as well as a township map of each county.

I began the maps with information that I gathered from the Special Schedules of the Eleventh Census (1890) Enumerating Union Veterans and Widows of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Although I reviewed the original records several times, there are a significant number of veteran’s names that may not be included. Some census takers did not record the regiment. Others marked the 5th USCI and 27th USCI as Ohio regiments. And for men who served in the Navy, census takers almost exclusively listed only the ship name, so it is not possible to tell the sailor’s race. If you know of men who should be included on a specific county’s list, please send me a note through the Contact Me form.

The maps also include information from military service records, pension files, The Military History of Ohio : Its Border Annals, its Part in the Indian Wars, in the War of 1812, in the Mexican War, and in the War of the Rebellion, and the collection of Ohio Soldiers Grave Registration Cards, 1804-1958.

These pages are “works-in-progress.” I continue to add more sources and information from my research that I have gathered over the last twenty+ years on the Black men who served in the Civil War.
